BP exiting the UK North Sea doesn’t mean the North Sea is dead

I’ve seen a few posts on LinkedIn lately claiming that bp exiting the UK North Sea means North Sea drilling is dead. I think that’s misleading.

Anyone who has been in this industry long enough knows it’s natural for super majors to exit mature basins. For the last decade, most of them have been quietly reducing their North Sea footprint and redirecting capital to new frontiers, where the risks are higher, but so are the returns. Guyana and Namibia’s Orange Basin are the clearest examples.

Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil and TotalEnergies have all sold down or restructured their UK North Sea positions over the past several years. bp is simply the last major standing with a standalone UK business.

This isn’t the North Sea dying. It’s a basin maturing, the way every basin eventually does.
